This study presents a macrosociolinguistic profile of English in Russia. The main discussion of the uses and users of the English language focuses on the context of contemporary Russia, which presents a great opportunity for observing the patterns of linguistic changes brought about by the fall of the Iron Curtain and globalization forces. A concise sociolinguistic overview of the historical presence of the English language in Russia and in the Soviet Union precedes the detailed analysis of the spread of English in Russia. Applying Fishman's (1971) Sociology of Language model and Kachru's World Englishes paradigm, the functions of English in the Russian society were analyzed within historical, ideological, attitudinal, functional, formal, pragmatic, and acquisitional parameters (Kachru 1990). The investigation of nine societal domains (politics, business, science, education, media, advertising, popular culture, social groups, and various sub-cultures) revealed a wide range of functions of the English language in Russia. These findings led to a proposal of a number of considerations for analyzing the spread of English in the countries of the Expanding Circle.
